ATTENDANCE - To ensure a smooth transition from home to school, please help your child arrive at school with enough “lead time” to settle in and organize belongings BEFORE instruction, which promptly begins at 8:05. Visiting with friends on the playground (before the school doors open at 7:55 AM) is a wonderful way to make that transition.

DRESS - Please review the dress code and help your child arrive at school in appropriate attire. Students should bring smocks or art shirts to leave at school to be worn on art days. Bathing suits and tennis shoes should be brought to school and left in the students’ cubbies. Girls should wear dress code P.E. shorts under their jumpers on physical education days. Please be sure that your child’s name is clearly marked on all clothing. We have attached a schedule of our class specials.

HOMEWORK - Third grade homework is expected to take anywhere from 30 minutes to 45 minutes each night. The homework will vary each night. Your child will be given an assignment notebook that will be used to record daily homework assignments. Assignments are posted in a consistent place in the classroom. Students are given ample time to record the homework in their assignment notebooks each day. To begin the school year, we request that you review your child’s assignments, giving attention to quality and careful completion of the assigned work. We have given each student a binder to transport important information to and from school each day. One folder in the binder is marked “Homework”, which all the paper work inside this folder should be returned to school. The other folder in the binder will be utilized as “Take Home” and all completed student work along with any parent communication will be located in this pocket of the folder. Your child’s binder is expected to go home each afternoon and to be returned the following day.

CLASS CULTURE - As a class, we have introduced our Lower School community behavior expectations. These norms are based on the Responsive Classroom model, which are part of creating a positive and warm learning environment for all students. We will continue to discuss and model these rules throughout the school year. The following guidelines are the foundation for appropriate student behavior:

C ooperation
A ssertion
R esponsibility
E mpathy
S elf Control

BIRTHDAYSBirthdays offer an opportunity to celebrate how each child is special! If you so wish, we would love to celebrate your child’s birthday during the school day. On the day of celebration, students may bring a simple finger food treat (with napkins).  If drinks are part of the sharing, they must be in a single serving container (no pouring).  No favors can be distributed at school birthday celebrations. Remember that invitations to parties should be sent through the mail and not distributed at school, unless every child in the class is invited. Please let us know in advance that your child would like to celebrate their birthday with the class so that we plan accordingly. Students who have summer birthdays can make arrangements in May to celebrate their birthdays toward the end of the school year. In Third Grade, the celebration includes the child and their classmates. We will share pictures with parents via Seesaw.

We are eagerly looking forward to sharing our exciting year with you on Parents’ Night, Thursday, September 1st at 7:00pm. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. We are so thrilled to have you and your child as part of our third grade family!
